The Southie Switch-Up: Boston’s Historic 2026 St. Paddy’s Takeover

St. Patrick’s Day in Boston is legendary, and 2026 is shaping up to be an especially historic year. Because March 17th falls on a Tuesday, the biggest celebrations and events will happen over the preceding weekend.

Here is what you can expect if you are heading into the city for the festivities:

The South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The parade is the centerpiece of the weekend and draws upwards of a million spectators.

β€’ Date & Time: Sunday, March 15, 2026, stepping off at 11:30 AM.

β€’ Major Route Change: To honor the 250th anniversary of Evacuation Day (March 17, 1776), the 2026 parade route is reversed.

It will begin at Andrew Square and travel backwards through Southie to finish near Broadway Station.

β€’ New Family-Friendly Zone: Organizers are setting up a designated family-friendly viewing area at Medal of Honor Park (M Street) for those who want a safer, more relaxed environment away from the rowdiest crowds.

Logistics & Survival Tips

Getting around Boston during St. Patrick’s Day weekend requires a bit of patience and planning.

β€’ Transportation: Driving into South Boston is strongly discouraged. Parking is virtually non-existent, street towing begins as early as 3:00 AM, and ride-shares will be trapped in gridlock.

β€’ The T: The MBTA (specifically the Red Line to Broadway or Andrew) is your best bet, but expect train cars and stations to be shoulder-to-shoulder from noon until the early evening.

β€’ The Tuesday Holiday: Because St. Patrick’s Day coincides with Evacuation Day, Tuesday, March 17 is an official Suffolk County holiday. While bars, restaurants, and businesses will be open, public schools and local government offices will be closed.
